Cancer Prevention
The vision of LUCC Cancer prevention is to serve as a hub that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitates discoveries to advance our understanding of underlying cancer risk and prognostic factors, socioecological phenomena, environmental factors, biological processes, screening programs, health promoting programs and therapeutic interventions in order to promote Cancer prevention at different levels.
Cancer prevention plays a pivotal role in both preclinical and clinical research, offering benefits that can lead to fewer cancer diagnoses, better diagnostics and treatments due to improved understanding of disease aetiology, patient needs and patient care. There are multiple groups conducting research projects at the LUCC working at different levels of prevention.
0. Primordial prevention entails preventing the development of cancer risk factors.
- Primary prevention deals with preventing the initial occurrence of the disease, for example via vaccination.
- Secondary prevention means early detection of diseases, allowing timely intervention and improved treatment outcomes for example via screening.
- Tertiary prevention is cancer treatment, managing existing conditions to prevent complications and improve quality of life.
- Quaternary Prevention aims to protect patients from over-treatment and unnecessary medical interventions.
The purpose of the LUCC-Cancer Prevention network is to:
- serve as a collaborative communication platform and channel for researchers from various disciplines in the field of cancer prevention
- facilitate greater collaboration between preclinical and clinical researchers who work at different levels of cancer prevention
- hold workshops in various topics of interest for researchers working with cancer prevention.
