Cancer Epidemiology

Cancer epidemiology is broadly about studying the distribution, patterns, and causes of cancer and cancer progression in a population. The population investigated can be small or large, ranging from hundreds to millions of individuals, either population-based or a selected population such as a particular risk group for cancer or cancer patients.

Many designs can be used in cancer epidemiology. They can be of descriptive kind, for example describing the prevalence (%) or the incidence (number of new cases) of cancer in a population, they can aim to identify causes for cancer or its progression (etiological studies), or they can be predictive, for example aiming to identify a screening marker for a cancer. The Cancer Epidemiology Network consists of a range of researchers of different research focus. The current two most represented research areas of the network are 1) large national cohort- and register-based studies examining for example obesity and related factors, medication use, and heredity with the risk and survival of different cancer forms, and 2) local and national cohorts, where breast cancer risk, prognosis and treatment prediction are investigated. All researchers at Lund university involved in cancer epidemiology research, or interested in it, are welcome to join our network!

The purpose of the LUCC-Cancer Epidemiology network is to:

  • increase the knowledge of topics and methods of relevance for cancer epidemiology research
  • facilitate knowledge exchange and potential collaboration between researchers within cancer epidemiology at Lund University.
