Head and Neck network
Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the 6th most incident cancer worldwide: in Sweden approx. 1,600 patients per year present with the disease. It involves malignancies localised to the sinonasal and oral cavities, the pharynx, the larynx, and the salivary glands. Conventionally, treatments include surgery and radio¬therapy (w/wo chemotherapy). The recent introduction of immunotherapy, notably immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI), represents a new tool to the treatment arsenal. The overall 5-year survival is close to 70%.
The LUCC-HNC network includes research groups focusing on basic research in genomics, cell biology, immunology, microbiology/virology, and pathology as well as groups active in clinical research including aspects of work-up, treatment, rehabilitation, epidemiology, and health economy. Importantly, the constellation represents a potential for true translational research. This is warranted given a potential for improved survival rates, the side effects produced by the treatment, and the overall economic impact on society.
The purpose of the network is to:
- enhance the basic knowledge in the field of Head and Neck
- improve the work-up, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with the condition.
To this end, and to facilitate scientific interactions, the LUCC-HNC network develops a platform that, e.g., organizes regular seminars. For more information, please, contact the current co-leaders: Associate Professor Maria Gebre-Medhin, Professor Malin Lindstedt, or Professor Lennart Greiff.
