Skin
Skin cancer is the most common malignancy and includes the main forms basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. The most aggressive type, malignant melanoma, affects more than 5000 individuals each year in Sweden and the incidence is still increasing.
The treatment for advanced stage melanoma has dramatically changed during the last decade with clinical introduction of targeted- and immunotherapy. LUCC-Skin is one of the smaller networks and comprises about 5 research groups and 30 members. Research projects span from basic science to clinical studies with major research projects within epidemiology, immunotherapy resistance, new diagnostic tools, teledermatoscopy and AI, familial melanoma and tumor immune microenvironment.
Melanoma research in Lund is internationally recognized for its truly translational aspects with a critical mix of clinician scientists from many disciplines to basic scientists, statisticians and computational biologists. The overall main task that LUCC-Skin is trying to carry out is to improve the clinical management of patients with skin cancer and in particular melanoma. This includes to determine risk factors, understand the early genetic steps for melanoma transformation, define early prognostic biomarkers and identify tumor-based treatment predictive factors.
The purpose of the LUCC-Skin network is to provide:
- a forum for skin cancer researchers to collaborate and connect with each other;
- a critical mix of clinician scientists and pre-clinical researchers to conduct research of excellence that is patient-centered and clinically relevant.
The LUCC-Skin network organizes monthly meetings, annual retreats, symposia, invited speakers, and other scientific and social activities (see LUCC calendar). To learn more, contact Göran or Karolin.
